Preparing For Confirmation

In the course of their faith journey, those baptized at an early age are expected later to make a mature and public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism.  This event, a sacrament in the Episcopal Church, is called “Confirmation."  During this service, a candidate receives the “laying on of hands” by a bishop.

Confirmation is preceded by a period of preparation, “inquirers” classes at the Cathedral, in which the candidates can ask questions about the Episcopal Church and explore their relationship with God.  Confirmation often occurs during an individual’s teen-aged years.  However, adults can also be confirmed.  The church also performs services for “affirmation” when an individual wants to restate his or her commitment after a period of religious apathy and for “reception” when an individual who was confirmed in another Christian denomination wants to make a new commitment in the Episcopal Church.
