Mission: The Community Ministry Committee is tasked with the opportunities and responsibilities of social, political and ecumenical Outreach efforts. It is chaired by a Chapter member with a shared-leadership approach to the many various missions. Deacon Mark Sluss is the clergy umbrella authority providing guidance.
Current Efforts: We provide outreach to our downtown neighbors currently experiencing homelessness via our Saturday Morning Breakfast and Chapel Hours, the widely distributed Social Services Quick Reference Card directing folks to needed professional service providers, numerous personal interactions both on Cathedral property and by “walk-and-talk” tours of our immediate area, and the help of several parishioners during meal hours at the nearby Centenary Church. We also designate an area service provider to receive a portion of Sunday loose-plate offerings, donate food to food outreach campaigns, etc. The Committee is presently exploring re-redevelopment of our operational relationship with Metropolitan Congregations United, an established social justice advocacy organization. Additionally, we contribute money and manpower to Diocesanwide and national Episcopal Church outreach efforts, but we do not receive funding at Diocesan level in return.
Proposed Outreach Efforts: Two dozen ideas for new outreach missions have been presented and are currently under research and development, including new efforts to be a safe spiritual sanctuary for returning military veterans and their families, veterans experiencing homelessness, and just-wage advocacy. We encourage you to prayerfully consider participating in what many consider the Cathedral's most important mission effort—not only in defining what our congregation is all about but also in demonstrating by discerned actions to the greater community our value as a resource church.
